[Title]
Narrative Signals of Systemic Risk in the Noise of Media

[Guest Lecturer]
Prof. Ilan Chabay, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam, Germany (Visiting prof. of DRS-DPRI)

[Abstract]
We are witnessing profound changes in the complex, interdependent social-environmental system. These changes that have their origin in human activities, impose potentially catastrophic systemic risks, including pandemics, climate change, wealth inequality, and food insecurity. To sustain at least adequate, just, and equitable living conditions, human societies must continually innovate, learn and adapt. Societies need to engage their people in changing to new, more sustainable patterns of behavior that support the well-being of all.
I will present preliminary studies on narratives, particularly those in digital media, and how they provide data for understanding how certain systemic risks related to sustainability are perceived and are promoted or opposed. A deeply interdisciplinary approach that brings together natural science, engineering, design, social science, art and humanities has been an essential part of our process of developing concepts and interpreting data from narratives to yield new insights into changing collective behaviors to sustainable futures in the contexts and cultures of our world.

Short bio: Ilan Chabay currently is spending January through May 2021 as visiting professor at Kyoto University in the Disaster Prevention Research Institute. He has recently been appointed Chair of the External Research Evaluation Committee of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (chikyu-ken), Kyoto for 2021-2023.
At the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam Germany, Ilan is Head of Strategic Science Initiatives and Scientific Project Leader of the Global Sustainability Strategy Forum and the KLASICA (Knowledge, Learning, and Societal Change) projects. He has been at IASS since 2012. He is also Adjunct Professor in the Global Futures Lab of Arizona State University.
Ilan’s first career was as research scientist and professor in laser physics and chemistry at US National Institutes of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland and at Stanford University in California. He became associate director of The Exploratorium Science Museum in San Francisco, then founder and for 18 years president of an innovative company in Silicon Valley designing and producing interactive exhibitions for 230 museums around the world, including Disney, Smithsonian, and NASA. His current career in social science began in 2006 as Hasselblad Professor in the sociology and applied IT departments at University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University in Sweden, before he came to IASS in 2012. In addition to his research and more than 80 publications in both natural and social sciences, he continues to design games to engage and inspire people with authentic processes of scientific inquiry that enhance understanding, agency and commitment for moving to just and equitable sustainable futures.
