Press Release – Flood Control Timeline of Disaster Base Hospitals

According to the report issued by the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University on 2 April 2022, it found that 34% of medical institutions designated for infectious diseases nationwide suffered flood damage due to heavy rainfall once in a thousand years, and 26% even once every 100 to 200 years. The report details the survey conducted on the flooding of the Kuma River in Kumamoto Prefecture and the Hitoyoshi Medical Center. Prof. Tetsuya Sumi, and Associate Professor Takahiro Sayama of Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, Shimizu Corporation (President Kazuyuki Inoue), and Hitoyoshi Medical Center (Hospital Director Masami Kimura), conducted a disaster prevention training at the Hitoyoshi Medical Center on 6 May 2022 to verify its effectiveness.

Prediction of Changes in Global Storm Surges and Waves Due to Global Warming – Evaluation of Coastal Disaster Risk in Coastal Areas of the World-

Joint research was conducted by Assoc. Prof. Tomoya Shimura, Prof. Nobuhito Mori and Assistant Prof. Takuya Miyashita of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University, the Argonne National Laboratory in the United States, and the Meteorological Research Institute of the Japan Meteorological Agency to predict future changes in global high tides and waves due to global warming.

Earthquake off the Coast of Fukushima 16 March 2022

A M7.4 earthquake struck at a depth of 57km off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture at around 23:36 on 16 March 2022. The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University has started a disaster investigation on this event. Please be careful about the occurrence of aftershocks and the surrounding conditions. We would like to express our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this earthquake, their families, and all concerned.

Analysis of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai volcano eruption in Tonga on 15 January 2022

A very large-scale eruption occurred at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haapai volcano in Tonga at around 13:15 on January 15, 2022 (around 04:15 on the same day in UTC). A tsunami warning was announced in Japan as well, and tsunamis exceeding 1m were observed.
Dr. Masumi Yamada, Assistant Professor, Earthquake Source Mechanisms, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Japan; and Dr. Tung-Cheng Ho, Researcher, Climate Change Risk Prediction and Adaptation Research Unit, analyzed tsunami and volcanic shock waves using data from seismometers, barometers, and ocean bottom pressure gauge. As a result, it was found that the tsunami propagated concentrically from Tonga, and its speed was almost the same as the sound speed.

Effects of episodic slow slip on seismicity and stress near a subduction-zone megathrust

The research work carried out by Professor Takuo Shibutani et.al from 2013 to2021 in collaboration with the National Research and Development Agency Building Research Institute and other institutions and universities was published in the online scientific journal “Nature Communications” of the Nature Publishing Group, UK on 21 December 2021 (10 am UK time, 19:00 Japan time).
