A press release has been issued on the joint implementation of an academic research emergency cruise vessel “Hakuho Maru” in response to the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. The research is carried out by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as “JAMSTEC”), Earthquake Research Institute, the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University, Graduate School of Science, Chiba University, Department of Marine Resources and Energy, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Tokai University A research team consisting of the University’s Faculty of Oceanography, Kyoto University Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Hyogo Prefectural University Graduate School of Science, and Kagoshima University Graduate School of Science and Engineering to investigate the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred on 1 January 2024. The academic research vessel “Hakuho Maru” owned by JAMSTEC will be used to carry out navigational observations such as seafloor topography surveys in the sea area around the epicenter where active seismic activity continues. The emergency research cruise will involve the installation of a total of two observation devices. The observational equipment installed on this cruise will be recovered after about a month. The data obtained will be analyzed in detail to clarify the actual state of the earthquake fault that caused this earthquake, the mechanism of earthquake and tsunami generation.
