Establishment of a new research and development center on Dam Upgrading and Sediment Environment Restoration Engineering

In April 2024, a new research and development center on Dam Upgrading and Sediment Environment Restoration Engineering was established under the  Water Resources Environment Research Center, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University. The Center will strive to develop various technologies for upgrading existing dam-hardware and software to strengthen the flood control function of dams in preparation for heavy rain disasters that are becoming increasingly severe under the threat of climate change. It will also expand hydroelectric power generation, which is once again being evaluated as a domestic renewable energy source, and promote its implementation in domestic and international projects.

The newly established Center will contribute to river basin flood control and carbon neutrality – to use dams “wisely,” “increase,” and “for a long period of time” –
