Risk analysis of small LNG, NH3 or H2 storage in ports for the use as marine fuels

[Abstract]

Europe is largely engaged in a broad decarbonisation process that spans the entire transport system and the energy sector with policies like the EU Fit for 55. This initiative is affecting all transport sectors and is also specifically focused to maritime applications close to European port areas. Interest in alternative fuels that may replace traditional fossil fuels (namely, heavy gasoil or even LNG) such as hydrogen (H₂), ammonia (NH₃) is driven by this decarbonization effort. Indeed, the maritime sector is currently evaluating a range of technological solutions that originate from developments in parallel industries and require adaptation to shipboard and port operational conditions. The proper selection of an alternative fuel represents a complex and interdisciplinary task including techno-economic and environmental aspects ultimately affecting a KPI driven multicriteria decision making process. However, the safe storage of these fuels at ports constitutes a key factor for making this decision. In this framework a Risk assessment study has been undertaken to define the safety zones in the port areas and the necessary mitigation measures to be taken. This work has been supported the by EU Interreg IPA ADRION 2021-2027 program.
 

[Biography]

Dr Z. S. Nivolianitou works as a Research Director in the National Centre for Scientific Research (NCSR) “DEMOKRITOS”in Athens, Greece. She is a chartered Chemical engineer (PhD and Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University in Athens, Greece), with further consolidated knowledge on the Risk and Safety Analysis of Chemical Plants that comprises both the assessment and management of risks from technological systems together with the simulation of natural phenomena that result from an accident. She has an over 30-year experience in the area of industrial safety (mainly chemical plants) in the domains of Risk Analysis, Safety Auditing in the process Industry, Decision Making in Land Use Planning around chemical sites, and in Decision Support and Environmental Impact Analysis. She has published more than 90 scientific publications and technical reports and has co-authored four books. The safe use of LNG, Ammonia and of other alternative substances as marine fuels is her current research domain.
