Job description The candidate will contribute to develop methodologies for (1)forecasting models for fault slip evolution, (2) short-, medium-, and long-term evaluation of seismic activity and hazards, (3) geodetic data analysis for detecting signals, and (4) next-generation scientific Al technologies related to the above under the MEXI-funded project: “Seismology TowArd Research innovation for Earthquake evaluatioN with EXacT data” (STAR-E NEXT)” (https://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/kaihatu/jishin/mext_03435.html,, written in Japanese). Close collaboration with participating institutions in the project is strongly encouraged.
Requirements A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree is required. Alternatively, master’s degree with experience in research and development on related topics.

The candidate is expected to have experience in modeling earthquake generation processes, in analysis of crustal deformation or seismic wave data, and in Bayesian inference, data assimilation, or machine learning using such data.

Contract start date As soon as possible to March 31,2027.

NB.rrhe employment contract is renewable until the end of the program (March 31, 2031),based on evaluation results. Renewal of the contract will be based on the workload, work performance, attitude, ability, progress of the work engaged in, management situation, and acceptance of external funds employed at the end of the contract period.

Probation period Six months in accordance with the regulations of Kyoto University
Business hours Working conditions: Five (5) working days per week

Working hours: 38 hours 45 minutes per week under discretionally labour system

NB. If the discretionary work system for specialized work is not applied, the employee works from 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM with one hour break (12:00-13:00).

Overtime may be required when necessary

Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, year-end and New Year holidays, and Foundation Day, as per University guidelines

Salary Salaries are determined based on the Kyoto University Standards depending on capabilities and backgrounds (annual salary system)
Allowance Any allowance such as commuting expenses, housing expenses, bonuses etc. is not provided.
