The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position.

 

Location: Research Center for Earthquake Hazards, Seismic and Volcanic Hazards Mitigation Research Group, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Gokasho, Uji, Kyoto 611-0011, Japan (at home or other places if University allows or orders to work remotely).

 

Job description and required qualifications:
For mitigation of earthquake disasters it is important to advance understanding of generation processes of inland earthquakes. By employing seismological methods, the appointed assistant professor will conduct research to clarify crustal structure and stress states, including the deeper extension of active faults and the distribution of crustal fluids. The candidate should also actively engage in acquiring and analyzing new seismic observation data, by utilizing facilities of the Abuyama and other observatories.
Additionally, the candidate will have responsibility for education in the Division of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University. A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree is required at the commencement of employment, and the candidate is expected to be able to use Japanese on a daily basis.

 

Anticipated start date: As soon as possible on or after April 1, 2026

 

Term of employment: 6 years (contract is renewable once for an additional 4 years, judged in accordance with “the Arrangement on Evaluation of Achievement for Faculty Staff with Term of Employment (Assistant Professor)”)

 

Probation period: 6 months

 

Working time: Discretionary labor system (standard working hours: 7 hours 45 minutes per day, 38 hours 45 minutes per week). If the discretionary labor system is not chosen the working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 with a break between 12:00 to 13:00. Overtime may be ordered.
Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, Statutory holidays under the Act on National Holidays, Year-end and New Year’s holidays, and Anniversary of Foundation of the University.

 

Salary and Allowance: To be determined in accordance with Kyoto University regulations.

 

Social insurance: (1) National Public Service Mutual Aid Associations, (2) Employee’s pension insurance, (3) Unemployment insurance, and (4) Worker’s accident insurance

• (2) List of publications (divided clearly into refereed journal papers and others)
• (3) Copies of up to five relevant papers
• (4) Brief summary of research and related contributions (up to two A4 pages)
• (5) Statement of research plans (up to two A4 pages, including figures)
• (6) Recommendation letters from two references (a recommendation letter may be substituted by the name and contact information of a reference, including the postal address, and e-mail address)
