The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position.

 

Location: Sakurajima Volcano Observatory, Research Center for Volcano Hazards Mitigation, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, 1722-19 Sakurajima-Yokoyama-cho, Kagoshima 891-1419, Japan (at home or other places if University allows or orders to work remotely).

 

Job description and required qualifications:

To reduce volcanic disasters, the appointed Assistant Professor will study the ejection of pyroclastic materials from volcanic craters, their advection and dispersion, fallout, and eventual deposition on the ground at volcanoes with frequent eruptions, such as Sakurajima. Specifically, the candidate is expected to conduct research using approaches that combine observations and numerical simulations, from interdisciplinary perspectives including volcanology and meteorology. Additionally, the candidate will have responsibility for education in the Division of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University. A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree is required at the commencement of employment, and the candidate is expected to be able to use Japanese on a daily basis.

 

Anticipated start date: As soon as possible after the selection.

 

Term of employment: 6 years (contract is renewable once for an additional 4 years, judged in accordance with “the arrangement on evaluation of achievement for faculty staff with term of employment (assistant professor)”)

 

Probation period: 6 months

 

Working time: Discretionary labor system (standard working hours: 7 hours 45 minutes per day, 38 hours 45 minutes per week). If the discretionary labor system is not chosen the working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 with a break between 12:00 to 13:00. Overtime may be ordered.Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, Statutory holidays under the Act on National Holidays, Year-end and New Year’s holidays, and Anniversary of Foundation of the University.

 

Salary and Allowance: To be determined in accordance with Kyoto University regulations.

 

Social insurance: (1) National Public Service Mutual Aid Associations, (2) Employee’s pension insurance, (3) Unemployment insurance, and (4) Worker’s accident insurance

(2) List of publications (divided clearly into refereed journal papers and others)

(3) Copies of up to five relevant papers

(4) Brief summary of research and related contributions (up to two A4 pages)

(5) Statement of research plans (up to two A4 pages, including figures)

(6) Recommendation letters from two references (a recommendation letter may be substituted by the name and contact information of a reference, including the postal address, and e-mail address)
