The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position.

 

Location: Research Section of Crustal Activity Information, Research Center for Earthquake Hazards, and Research Section of Integrated Disaster Reduction Systems, Research Center for Disaster Reduction Systems, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University, Gokasho, Uji, Kyoto 611-0011, Japan (at home or other places if University allows or orders to work remotely).

The successful candidate will, upon appointment, be required to work at Kyoto University’s On-Site Laboratory, the “International Research Laboratory for Earthquake and Tsunami Risk Cognition and Reduction (iLETs),” located at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City, Mexico, for a long-term assignment (approximately 300 days per year), if instructed by the University.

 
Job description and required qualifications:

To contribute to the mitigation of disasters caused by large earthquakes and associated tsunamis in subduction zones throughout the Pacific Rim, the appointed Assistant Professor will conduct research on the development of effective dissemination methods for earthquake early warnings and emergency information, based on seismic and geodetic observations. The research will also include studies of how such information is received, interpreted, and evaluated by the public and relevant stakeholders. Through these studies, the candidate will advance methodologies for effective risk communication and explore innovative approaches to the dissemination of disaster-related information. In addition, the candidate will be expected to conduct comparative studies between Japan and Latin American countries, particularly Mexico, with the aim of developing regionally appropriate communication strategies tailored to the social and cultural contexts of Latin America.

As part of Kyoto University promotion of gender equality, this position is only open to female applicants. Additionally, the candidate will have responsibility for education in the Division of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Graduate School of Science or in the Social Informatics Course at the Graduate School of Informatics, Kyoto University. A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree is required. The candidate is expected to be proficient in English and to have sufficient language skills to communicate with local communities in Latin American countries, especially Mexico.
 
Anticipated start date: As soon as possible after the selection.

 

Term of employment: 6 years (contract is renewable once for an additional 4 years, judged in accordance with “the arrangement on evaluation of achievement for faculty staff with term of employment (assistant professor)”)

 

Probation period: 6 months

 
Working time: Discretionary labor system (standard working hours: 7 hours 45 minutes per day, 38 hours 45 minutes per week). If the discretionary labor system is not chosen the working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 with a break between 12:00 to 13:00. Overtime may be ordered.Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, Statutory holidays under the Act on National Holidays, Year-end and New Year’s holidays, and Anniversary of Foundation of the University.

 
Salary and Allowance: To be determined in accordance with Kyoto University regulations.
