The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University invites applications for an Assistant Professor position.
 
Location: Research Section of Marine Seismology, Research Center for Earthquake Hazards, Disaster Prevention Research Institute, Kyoto University

Miyazaki Observatory: 3884, Kaeda, Miyazaki, 889-2161, Japan (at home or other places if the university allows or orders to work remotely) *There is a possibility that the place of work will be changed to Gokasho, Uji, Kyoto, 611-0011, Japan after five years of employment.

 
Job description and required qualifications:

To contribute to the mitigation of disasters caused by large earthquakes and tsunamis, the appointed Assistant Professor will conduct research aimed at improving the understanding of earthquake source processes beneath the seafloor and associated subsurface structures. In particular, to clarify the relationship between seismicity in the Hyuga-nada and potential large earthquakes in the Nankai Trough, the candidate will develop novel analysis methods for data obtained with the recently developed submarine cable observation network, as well as the integrated data of land-based data – including that from the Miyazaki Observatory – with independently acquired offshore and onshore observations.

Additionally, the candidate will have responsibility for education in the Division of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University. A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree is required, and the candidate is expected to be able to use Japanese on a daily basis.

 

Anticipated start date: As soon as possible after the selection.

 

Term of employment: 6 years (contract is renewable once for an additional 4 years, judged in accordance with “the arrangement on evaluation of achievement for faculty staff with term of employment (assistant professor)”)

 

Probation period: 6 months

 
Working time: Discretionary labor system (standard working hours: 7 hours 45 minutes per day, 38 hours 45 minutes per week). If the discretionary labor system is not chosen the working hours are from 8:30 to 17:15 with a break between 12:00 to 13:00. Overtime may be ordered.Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, Statutory holidays under the Act on National Holidays, Year-end and New Year’s holidays, and Anniversary of Foundation of the University.

 
Salary and Allowance: To be determined in accordance with Kyoto University regulations.

(4) Brief summary of research and related contributions (up to two A4 pages)

(6) Recommendation letters from two references (a recommendation letter may be substituted by the name and contact information of a reference, including the postal address, and e-mail address)
