Successful Completion of the 2024 DPRI Open Lecture Series

The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University successfully convened the 2024 Open Lecture Series in hybrid at the Kihada Hall at the Uji Campus, Kyoto University (Uji City) on 14 September 2024.  The hybrid session with simultaneous streaming was attended by 125 persons in-person, and 318 people attending online, bringing the total to 443 participants.

The 35th Session of the Open Lecture Series was under the theme of “New Developments in Disaster Prevention Research in Kyoto”.  The series focussed on topics and efforts of research conducted at DPRI, and disaster prevention stories related to Kyoto.

The lecture series was opened by a warm greeting by Prof. Tomoharu Hori, Director, DPRI, Kyoto University.

The following five speakers shared very interesting, lively and easy-to-understand presentations which were very much appreciated by the participants:

  • Masatoshi Miyazawa – “Earthquakes occurring closer to home – Southern Kyoto Prefecture”,
  • Kochi Hayashi, “Underground structure of the Kyoto Basin as seen through physical exploration and AI”,
  • Kana Nakatani, “Understanding the risk of debris flow disasters”,
  • Associate Prof. Kobayashi, “Characteristics of Japanese rivers and the uniqueness of the Uji River”, and
  • Associate Prof. Yoko Matsuda, “Rethinking of ‘Protecting your own life'”.

At the end of the lecture, there was a Q&A Session with many questions by the audience.

The 35th Session of the Open Lecture Series was closed by Prof. Katsuya Yamori, Deputy Director, DPRI, Kyoto University, Japan.

Among the many positive feedback, one enthusiastic participant commented – “I was able to learn on a wide range of specialized subjects, and especially learn about disaster prevention activities and resources limited to Kyoto, in an easy-to-understand manner,” and “Thank you for the meaningful content. I would like to participate again next year.”

The questions and comments received from the participants will be utilized in educational and research activities to improve our research work to the betterment of the science community and the society.

The DPRI Open Lecture Series will be moving around the region and will be held in Kyoto City biennially.
