IDNDR SPECIAL PROJECT

I-2: Disasters Caused by Floods and Geomorphologic
Changes and Their Mitigation

1.Japan-Indonesia Workshop in 1996
The Japan-Indonesia Workshop on Disasters Caused by Floods and Geomorphological Changes and Their Mitigation will be held in Yogyakarta in this summer to promote a better mutual understanding not only between Japanese and Indonesian sides but also between the two projects conducted(Semarang and Brantas) and to facilitate research collaboration. About 15 papers are supposed to be presented, as interim reports. The Workshop is open and anybody can take part in it.
Date: August 21-23, 1996
Place: Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Topics:
(1)Prediction of Rainfall and Runoff
(2)Prediction of Sediment Runoff and River Charges
(3)Beach Change Prediction and Erosion Control
(4)Countermeasures against Floods and Beach Erosion Inquiry:
Prof.Shinji Egashira

2.Semarang Basin Project
Dr. Yamashita visited the RIWRD(Research Institute for Water Resources Development),Indonesia,March 4-12,1996,for wave-currents observation in Jepara coast as well as discussion on research plan in FY1996. He participated with Dr. Syamsudin in the meeting of Presentation of Recent Tsunami in Irian Jaya which was held in Jakarta on March 11.
Irs. Kardana and Ibnu Purwana visited DPRI, March 7-30 and March 23-29, respectively. Special lectures by them were held at DPRl on March 28. Ir. Kardana(RIWRD) had a talk entitled "Jepara Beach(Semarang Basin) Conservation"and Ir. Purwana(Meteorological and Geophysical Agency, Indonesia) talked about "Indonesia's Earthquakes and Tsunamis: An Overviews". Future activities of the collaboration program were also discussed after the lectures.
Ir. Nining Ningsih, Lecturer of ITB( Bandung Institute of Technology), received a Monbusho Scholarship and has been in DPRl since April 1,1996. Her doctoral program in Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University will start in next semester. Her research theme is "Sea floor topography change prediction model in Jawa Sea" which includes "Beach change prediction in Jepara Coast". She will be involved in l-2 group of the IDNDR project this fiscal year.

3.Brantas River Basin Project
In November 1995, Irs. Isnugroho and Sudarta visited Prof. Egashira, Ritsumeikan Univ. and Prof. Takara, DPRI, Kyoto Univ. to develop relevant methods for predicting rainfall-runoff, sediment runoff and river changes as well as for utilizing remote sensing images.
In addition, the schedule of the research programme during 1995-1996 was discussed. In December 1995, Prof. Egashira, Prof. Fujita and Mr. Satofuka visited the Brantas River basin with some members of Indonesian side to collect data associated with river changes and to observe rainfall-runoff and sediment transportation.
The figure in the previous page shows one of the results for bed deformations of the Brantas River, which is calculated in terms of a mathematical method developed in the joint research. It indicates that a representative local scour is caused by secondary currents even at a section of slowly curved reach of the river.
