Building on the initiatives presented at the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 and the work of the Science and Technical Advisory Group of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), we establish a new international organization called the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI). GADRI is a forum for sharing knowledge and promoting collaboration on topics related to disaster risk reduction and resilience to disasters. GADRI facilitates discussions on,
1. Planning and organization of disaster risk research.
Formation of international research groups to investigate current global
disasters, and implement new research methodologies, and emphasizing transdisciplinary
approaches.
2.
Establishment of an international network for timely communication related to
disaster research and collaborations with other networks.
3.
Other issues relating to the promotion of disaster risk reduction, such as
engaging with policy makers and practitioners
The structure of GADRI includes a President, a Board of Directors, and the Members. In addition, there will be a Secretariat that will facilitate and organize GADRI activities. The Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University serves as the first Secretariat to initiate these activities.
The membership of GADRI is open to all interested organizations related to disaster
research. At this time, there is no membership fee. Details about the selection and
terms of the President and Board of Directors will be decided by a small working
group, which will be soon chosen. Procedures and schedules for the meetings of the
Board will also be decided by the working group. Please notify Prof. Hirokazu Tatano
GADRI also plans to have subcommittees that are involved in special research studies
and organizational activities. These subcommittees will be formed as needed to
promote GADRI activities.
