SYMPOSlUM ON JAPAN-INDONESIA lDNDR PROJECTS

SYMPOSlUM ON JAPAN-INDONESIA lDNDR PROJECTS
- Volcanology,Tectonics,Flood and Sediment Hazards -

September 21-23,1998
BANDUNG-INDONESIA

The concept of IDNDR was originally proposed by Dr.F.Press, President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1984,and states that we should make the last ten years of the 20th century"the Decade of lnternational Disasters Reduction"and should cooperate with one another to mitigate natural disasters in the world. The Disaster Prevention Research lnstitute (DPRI) of Kyoto University agreed to join the international movements of lDNDR, and research projects with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture, as a special international project in 1991.Thus,the project "Study of Prediction and Mitigation of Natural Disasters in Eastern Asia(Indonesia and China)" started as a three year program.The next five year joint research program started in 1994 with the overall title "Prediction and Mitigation of Natural Disasters in lndonesia and China".
The main subjects in lndonesia were(1)Igneous Process and Tectonics, and (2) Disasters Caused by Floods and Geomorphological Change and Their Mitigation. These projects cover aspects mostly in geoscience and civil engineering. For both lndonesia and Japan,these activities are of great strategic importance in the mitigation of natural hazards.Through this symposium we will endeavour to exchange our findings in the field of our studies for the aim of improving the strategies,methodologies, and techniques of our future activities in lndonesia.

The symposium covers various fields of studies related to natural disasters;
(1)Volcanic eruption prediction,(2)Volcanic hazard assessment,(3)Tectonics and crustal movement,(4)Earthquakes and seismotectonics,(5)Geomorphological changes,(6)Flood disaster and its control,(7)Sedimentation disaster and its control,(8)Coastalerosion and its control,(9)CoastalenvironmentPreservation
Extended abstracts of up to 8 pages should be submitted to the organizing committee by July 30th,1 998.
Complete papers will be published in the proceedings of the symposium at the end of March 1999.
