Japan-France Joint Project on Strong Motion Prediction

The scientific organization in Rhone-Alps, France, was willing to intensify its scientific exchanges with Japan and asked Prof. Nigon, University of Lyon, to inquire about possible contacts in many fields in 1992.
Then, seismologist group of Grenoble University headed by Prof. Pierre-Yves Bard proposed Japan-France cooperative research on strong motion seismology with Profs. Kojiro Irikura, DPRI, Kyoto University and Kazuyoshi Kudo, Earthquake Research Institute, University of Tokyo. Prof. Nigon came to Japan in March, 1993, to visit Japanese scientists in many fields including Profs. Irikura and Kudo and also some administrations in charge of management of research, After that, he suggested to apply the Japan-France cooperation research to both sides, Japanese and French organizations to obtain financial supports. Our proposal was accepted this year by the Monbusho International Scientific Joint Research Program for two years in the Japanese side.
But in the French side it is not accepted yet. We started the cooperative research from last April. It is very exciting for us to exchange not only past knowledges but new ideas through young peoples. We had already the following two meetings in Japan and in France.
The first meeting was held at DPRl on August 22,1995. Participants from the Japanese side are 10 persons including Prof. Irikura and Prof. Kudo of the Earthquake Research Institute (ERI), Tokyo University and those from the French side Profs. Pierre-Yves Bard and Claire Wajeman, Open seminar was also held by Prof. Bard after the meeting.
The second meeting was organaized again on October 23,1995 at Grenoble University. Participants from the Japanese side were four and those from the French side eleven. Open seminar on strong motion prediction was also held on October 26 and 27 by Mr. Iwata of DPRI, Prof. Sasatani of Hokkaido University and Prof. Kudo of ERI.
