The 2nd Japan-China Joint Workshop on Prediction and
Mitigation of Seismic Risk in Urban Regions


The C-1 research group of the DPRI project on Prediction and Mitigation of Natural Hazard in East Asia has four sub-theme programs; 1)Prediction of seismic activity in Hebei region, 2)Prediction of strong earthquake ground motions in Tangshan region, 3)Seismic risk assessment of urban region, 4)Urban planning against strong earthquake. We here report on the workshop entitled "Prediction and Mitigation of Seismic Risk in Urban Regions" held in Hikone, Japan on November 14-16, 1998.
The aim of this workshop is to discuss on Pre-diction and Mitigation of Seismic Risk in Urban Regions based on the recent catastrophic disasters in both countries, and to determine the type of research necessary to address the above problems in the 21st century. This year is the final year of this program and the DPRI project. Final conclusions must be introduced in this discussion. This workshop is mainly supported by the Monbusho International Scientific Research Program (Leader: T. Fujiwara) strongly related to the seismic theme of the DPRI project, and mainly organized by the DPRI and the School of Environmental Science, University of Shiga Prefecture. The Institute of Engineering Mechanics of China Seismological Bureau is cooperating in this program and the special project.
The organizers will soon publish the Workshop Proceedings, in which the following papers as well as the contents of discussions are included.
