Japan-China Workshop

C-1 : The Japan-China Joint Workshop on Prediction and Mitigation of Seismic Risk in Urban Region

Photo.1

C-1 research group of this project, has four sub-theme programs;

1) Prediction of seismic activity in Hebei region,
2)Prediction of strong earthquake ground motions in Tangshan region,
3)Seismic risk assessment of urban region,
4)Urban planning against strong earthquake. We here report the workshop on Prediction and Mitigation of Seismic Risk in Urban region held in Xian, China on October 11-13, 1997, related to the above-mentioned research project.
The objective of this workshop is to keep severe experiences due to the 1976 Tangshan earthquake and the 1997 Hyogoken-nanbu earthquake, to compare those damages in urban region and to analyze the seismicity, strong ground motion, hazard mitigation and new aseismic technology and finally to find what we should research for the above-mentioned problems toward 21st century. This workshop was mainly organized by the Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University supported by the Monbusho International Scientific Research Program, Japan (Leader: Prof. T. Fujiwara, DPRI), and also co-organized by the Institute of Engineering Mechanics (IEM), State Seismological Bureau of China and other Universities and organizations in Japan and China.
The proceedings of this workshop include the following papers as well as the contents of discussions, in which all of papers are summarized and future research problems are discussed.
We would like to have the next workshop in Kyoto in 1998 for proposal on prediction and verification of seismic risk in urban region to all over the world.
